Simplify a GPX file and reduce points

Oversized GPX files import badly and make navigation stutter. Reduce the point count at your chosen precision — the route shape stays, the file shrinks.

HOW IT WORKS

How to simplify a GPX file

  1. 01

    Import the GPX

Load the large GPX file into the editor.

  2. 02

    Set the simplification tolerance

In the Edit panel choose Simplify and a tolerance of 5, 10 or 20 metres. A notice shows the point count before and after.

  3. 03

    Compare and export

Check the point count and deviation, then download the smaller GPX.

Frequently asked questions

Will simplifying ruin the route shape?+

No, at a sensible level. The algorithm (RDP) drops redundant points while keeping the characteristic bends.

Why does my device reject a big GPX?+

Watches and bike computers cap the number of points per route. Simplifying helps you stay under that limit.

Can I see the before and after?+

Yes, the editor shows the point count before and after, so you stay in control of the change.
